A much, much more interesting day to talk about, with players doing drills all over the place today. So let’s recap most of it in a 32 Thoughts format.
Well, let’s start with Scott Morrow. The playoffs showed that there was still room to grow and with the way Carolina is heading, I don’t think there was going to be a full time NHL spot for him next year, nor time for him to fully grow into what he can be. Wish him nothing but the best in New York.
Hasbulla congratulating Kurban Limatov on getting drafted threw me for a loop, but after figuring out why it made more sense. Kurban is from Dagestan, a small republic in Russia that has produced some of the best UFC fighters of all time and also Hasbulla. Cool moment.
I think all the Russians really showed out today. Had genuine good moments of every single player.
I want the Canes to sign Stanislav Yarovoy. He’s a decent skater but his skill was been on full display today. There is more to develop in his game and I think North America would be the better place for that.
Roman Bausov is the best skating defenseman at camp, which is insane when you account for the fact that he’s 6’5.
Alexander Siryatskiy and Fyodor Avramov are smooth operators. Siryatskiy moves so well with the puck on his stick and Avramov is no different. Avramov’s shot is also crazy good. I’m really, really interested in what he can become.
The Swedish forwards, Viggo Nordlund and Filip Ekberg, look good. Still somewhat confused why Ekberg was still on the board in the 7th (probably because he’s 5’10). Nordlund’s shot is snappy.
Today was a much better day for Ivan Ryabkin, which shouldn’t shock anyone. His ability with the puck on his stick is incredible. His shot is one of the better ones I’ve seen.
Justin Poirier is such an interesting player. I’d wager that his skating has gotten better and his game remains extremely fun to watch. Him and Josh Nadeau are going to be incredibly fun to watch at Maine next year. Nadeau also had a good day.
I was originally shocked by the Charlie Cerrato pick but man, he’s good. He’s a good skater, he’s got a good shot, he’s got an extremely good personality that I could tell, just a lot to like about the player.
Sorry about the lack of videos and pictures during camp. Been having a ton of conversations with people and since these are guys I’m just now getting in person viewings of, I’m trying to be in the moment more and digested what they’re doing. Not a great excuse, but I’ll try to get some more tomorrow.
Lastly, I’ve liked all 3 goalies at camp. Semyon Frolov is very fun, using his size and aggression to really shut down shots. I’ve also been extremely impressed by Jaeden Nelson. He’s made a ton of good saves and has an explosive first step.
Last day tomorrow!
Whats your ranking of best shots in our system? My guess is:
1) Nadeau
2) Poirier
3) Ryabkin
